Facial Palsy UK is a charity that supports people affected by facial paralysis, provides information for health professionals and aims to fund new research. Every year they have an awareness week in March with multiple outreach campaigns across TV, radio, events and digital media.

The need:

There are over 50 types of facial palsy and people can have the condition from birth or becoming affected by it at any point in their life.  Our client required a cornerstone piece of content to drive awareness of facial palsy and the many ways it can effect people physically, mentally and socially. Something which could be shared online and referenced across all media channels.

Our creative solution:

For our research, we read through scores of powerful and emotional personal stories, all of which we needed to represent in a respectful way and would be easily digestible by a wide audience covering multiple demographics.

 

We generated the concept of visually describing a single day in the shoes of someone with facial palsy. By taking key similarities from the personal stories on the physical, social and mental impact of this condition we created several scenes and a persona called Chloe.

 

By showing Chloe dealing with day to day situations including a simple shower, getting to work, eating out and social interaction, we weaved together a story which was both real and relatable by people who live with the condition. This also created an easily accessible format for people without facial palsy to become educated on the condition.

Creating social engagement:

The final animated video ran to nearly three minutes. We wanted to try and capture as much attention as possible on social media and needed to tailor the animation to work depending on the platform. To this end, we split the animation down into the individual scenes with multiple call to actions and links to the full video on the facial palsy website. This way we could highlight different aspects of the effects of living with facial palsy and target smaller audience types for better engagement.
